Copper will naturally tarnish over time. Keep out of water to prevent faster tarnish. To shine this piece back up, it is save to use drop of dawn dish soap and some 000 steel wool (you can get it very cheap at Home Depot) and gently scrub the copper. Take care to avoid the stones. Make sure to dry completely!
